Joseph: 18 Months

I’m 1 1/2 years old!

This month I’ve been really chattering away and learning so many things. I’ve started to recognize some colors and love pointing them out to mom and dad. I am learning the letters of the alphabet, how to count to ten, and know my shapes. Stars are a current favorite of mine.

I really like to color with my crayons and to use chalk on the sidewalk and on the chalkboard. I’m left-handed, so sometimes this can get a little messy, but I’m having lots of fun.

DSC04980Reading books is this my jam. Some of my current favorite books are Goodnight Gorilla, Pony Brushes His Teeth, and Roadwork. I also have overcome my fear of Thomas the Tank Engine and really like to play and watch “Choo Choos” a lot.

I had a great time going to visit Grandma and Grandpa again. We swam in the pool and played outside a ton. My cousin Luke and I had a blast going to the playground and bouncing on the air mattress. He even let me play with his hockey stuff!

I’m really happy that daddy is around more. We have so much fun together and I get to impress him with all that I can do. We love to “get tough” and wrestle together, plus he lets me do things that mommy won’t let me do!

DSC04968Guess who’s walking? This guy! I’ve been toddling around for almost a month now and I am getting faster every day. Now that I’m up off the ground, I have a whole new perspective and can find so many more things to destroy explore.

I really love to be outside and play now that the weather isn’t too hot. Mommy takes me for walks all through the yard so I can stop and say Hi to the trees and flowers.

I am still quite the bookworm and have started to point at letters so I can “read” them. My favorite letters are O, A, C, and E. (Well, those are the ones I say anyways.)

We went to visit grandma and grandpa in Chicago for a week! I had so much fun at their house. We got to swim in the pool, play outside, and even sit on grandpa’s lawnmower!

Enough with the camera, Mom, I’m trying to watch Super Why!

I’ve been living it up this summer with plenty of swimming, visiting the zoo, and playing both indoors and out. This month I got to see my first parade and go to my first carnival. I really liked the train ride and the carousel!

My upper eye teeth are in and I’m now working on my lower ones.  I can’t wait for them to be in, I’m constantly chewing on my fingers and toys. I’m quite the chatter box, I “read” books to mommy and ask to go outside all of the time.

My favorite food right now is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and watermelon. Yum!

DSC04953I’m proud to say that I’ve been walking some. Mostly 5 or six steps to mom or dad, but I’m sure I’ll be racing around really soon. Then mom will really have to watch out!

My cousin Luke came out to visit me and he and I are best friends. I love to play with him in a blanket fort that we made and also snuggle up to read and watch him play his DS. We had a great time swimming together and just being two silly guys. I can’t wait to hang out again soon.

I have had so much fun this past month! I went on my first family vacation and got to see the ocean for the first time. I loved the waves and splashing in the surf. We got to go on lots of walks and played in the pool everyday.

I am still jabbering away and like to sing to myself and with mommy. I am SO close to walking. I will walk anywhere holding mummy’s fingers and “walk” on my knees too. I just like to crawl because that’s the faster way to get around.

DSC04896All of my first year molars are in, but now I’m working on my upper eye teeth! The tips have just broken through, but I’m constantly chewing on my fingers. I am really tired of getting new teeth, but it makes eating a lot easier. some of my favorite foods are blueberries, watermelon, daddy’s pancakes, and pizza.

I love reading my books, playing with my “bike” and going for rides in my wagon. Bath time is still the best time of day because I get to splash and play with my boats. The vacuum and I are still going strong and Walter and I wrestle every day. Mommy gave me my first job, to give Walter his treat when he comes inside.

I am looking forward to some more summer fun and learning more things!

****Mommy actually had this post ready to go on my actual 15 month birthday, but she was so tired that she forgot to upload it. *****

I continue to grow and grow! I am getting taller and losing a bit of my baby chubbiness. I am still not ready to walk, but I make up for it in climbing everything in my way.

I love to be outside, taking walks, wagon rides, and exploring the yard. I love to smell and touch flowers with mommy, too.

I jabber away, constantly talking to myself, Walter, or mommy and daddy. I also like to sing and dance whenever the mood strikes me, which is quite often!

I’m currently working on getting all four of my molars at once! They are all half-way through, thank goodness. I am tired of being in pain and so drooly and looking forward to being able to eat a wider array of food.

My favorite toys right now are my record player, puzzles, and my new firetruck. I still love to read all my books and, of course, my beloved vacuum. Mommy is hoping I’ll start to clean the carpets soon, but I think I’ll just push it around and play with it in the coat closet for a while longer.

I’m not doing an “official” portrait any more, but I thought I’d still record his monthly photo and give a brief update on how he continues to grow and change.

I’m a big boy now, over one year old! I had so much fun celebrating my birthday with my family and friends.

This month I’ve really improved in language and comprehension. I understand so much if what people say to me and can do many things when asked. I’m also adding new words to my vocabulary every day.

I love this warm weather because now I can go outside! Riding in my wagon and stroller are so much fun! I also love it when mom blows bubbles for me. I try really hard to do it, but mostly end up eating the bubble wand.

Books are still my jam, but a close second is playing music on my piano or record player and “dancing” to any music I hear. I can really groove!

Joseph’s First Birthday Party: Favors & Decorations

DSC04765

I’ve been meaning to share a bit of what I ended up doing for Joseph’s birthday party. For those of you that follow me on Pinterest, you might have noticed that we were having a “Friendly Monster” theme. I had an overwhelming amount of ideas for what to do. After considering the limited amount of time I had available, I distilled it down to these few things to focus on.

I made an “Adopt A Monster” bin, having each child bring home a little guy as part of the favor bag. I fell in love with this idea when I first saw it, and knew that if I only did one homemade thing for the party, this was it. I already had this pattern, and they were fairly quick to make. I decided to use fleece that I found in the remanent bin at JoAnn’s, however, these would be just as cute in different fabrics.

I also made up the “Monster Eggs” bags. I got a ton of jelly beans -yes, I picked out all of the black ones! – and portioned them out in glassine treat bags. Then I took some card stock and stamped the lettering on there, added a sticker, and voila!

I also made some of the garland to hang using this simple tutorial. I bought some tissue paper on clearance and used some yarn I had already on hand to string it up. Shawn and I got them all made in one evening watching TV. I was so happy with how it looked and it cost me pennies!

IMG_2881

Last but not least, I printed out each of Joe’s monthly photos and used spray adhesive to attach them to some canvases I got on sale at the craft store. Shawn and my dad hung them all for me using 3M hooks. I actually still have them up for right now, I love looking at them.

All this being said, I really could have gone overboard on the craftiness. I think that is a side effect of Pinterest, all these wonderful ideas and beautiful photos, you get to the point where you think you are crazy if you DON’T make a million individual cupcakes and matching paper drinking straws to your homemade origami napkins. These are the things that I wanted to do, however I also augmented my decorating with store bought banners, balloons, and used fabric yardage as a table cloth. I also farmed out the food to a caterer (pasta and italian beef sandwiches) which cost less than buying everything and making it myself, not to mention saving me from a mental break down in the kitchen the night before the party while I wept into the spaghetti sauce. (Ahem. . . it’s happened.) I also ordered his cake from a bakery. I was getting where I was panicked about making it “perfect” and Shawn looked at me and said something along the lines of “You’re nuts, order a damn cake.” Thank God for that man. It was delicious and adorable and I didn’t have to freak out trying to make the monsters “cute enough” or that it would list to one side like a drunken sailor.

All in all, I was super happy with the party. All the people we love were there to help us celebrate Joseph’s first year and that is all that really mattered.

Joseph: 12 Month Retrospective

For Joseph’s birthday party, I did a display with all of his monthly photos from the past year. It was so neat to be able to compare them side by side and to see how much he grew. I thought that it would be nice to share it here as well. Hope that you get as much of a kick out of it as I did.

Just typing that title took my breath away. How is this even possible? One year ago today yesterday you were born and now you are such a big boy at one years old! You make me laugh and shake my head at your silly ways. I am so lucky to be your mommy and I love you so very much. You truly are my sun and stars. Happy Birthday, Joseph William!

DSC04750

I’m one! I’m one! I’m one years old! This past year I have grown (and grown!) into a healthy, happy little boy. I am constantly babbling and singing all day long. I still love to read and mommy often finds me in my fort -behind daddy’s chair- flipping through all of my books. I still love my vacuum and push it around the house. Walter is my best friend, I wrestle and play with him all day. I am still not quite ready to walk, why should I when I can crawl so fast? I went sledding for the first time and although I was a bit nervous about going down the hill with mommy and my cousin Luke, I had a great time being dragged around the yard. I am so excited for my birthday party and continuing to grow so big and strong!

Joseph: 11 Months

DSC04678One month shy of a year! Where has the time gone?

I am a ball of energy and movement. Constantly on the go and crawling/cruising wherever I can. I am not quite walking on my own yet, but I am standing on my own for a few moments at a time. I’m sure I’ll be walking, or running, everywhere very soon.

DSC04676My love affair with the vacuum continues and I am more obsessed with books than ever. I also love to play with my trucks and of course wrestle with Walter. I also love to cook with mommy and open all of the cabinets in the kitchen.

My favorite foods right now are pasta and daddy’s blueberry pancakes. I also like to try whatever mommy and daddy are eating and having them feed me with their fork.

I have had a growth spurt and can now reach the doorknobs, although I haven’t quite figured out how to work them yet. Mommy seems pretty happy about this. I also got my first hair cut this month! I look more like the big boy that I am without all that hair.

One more month until the big day!
