Aarrghh! I went to the urgent care yesterday afternoon because my right thumb was hurting something awful all week. Doctor said that I pulled a tendon in my thumb and have to wear a stupid splint/cast thing for at least two weeks. Grrr! I have no idea how I did this to myself (playing with Walter, knitting injury, plain old clumsiness?) but I am really annoyed. Although I am left-handed, I am struggling with this thing. I can’t really do much strength training, I can barely type, and driving is a pain! I feel like I have devolved. No opposable thumb!
Vroom, Vroom, party starter!
Things have been crazy this week. After deciding this weekend that it was time for Smokey to be put out to pasture, things moved really quickly. We looked a quite a few cars and finally decided on a Honda CR-V. I wanted an SUV that would be able to handle these Wisconsin winters, yet nothing to larger and tank-like. It had to be fun to drive and have enough room for Walter and any future additions to Team Colley.
I was thinking about possibly going with a hybrid of some type, but the ones that are out there for SUVs are really expensive and I feel that the industry is still working out the kinks on them. So for right now, I am still a petrol girl. The nice thing at least is that I have great gas mileage and that Honda is really making strides as a “green” company. Plus, the car was manufactured in Ohio!
So anyways, after much negotiating, we pulled the trigger last night and signed the paperwork. She is sitting in the garage right now. I am going to go out there in a bit and reload all my CDs and misc. items back into it and basically spend some quality time with her. Most importantly, I need to come up with a good name! Shawn said the Blue Goose, but I am not really feeling it. Any suggestions?
Idle time leads to Etsying
Today has been a lazy day. More rain, so the hubby and I are staying inside. Read all three of the papers this morning with some delicious coffee. Then we have been puttering about the house. I read some of my new knitting books and have decided that I am going to start that baby blanket project this week. I also did some internetting, which led me to Etsy, which led me to purchases. ;0)
I picked up these pretty red earrings from Sulu. Aren’t they great? I think that they’ll be perfect for summer. Just the right pop of color. Plus they were only $12! Woo hoo!
I also picked up a lovely, handmade knitting needle organizer from sarahkincheloe, isn’t it sweet? I have been looking for something where I can stash my growing collection of knitting needles and assorted notions. I have seen other needle rolls in stores and online, but they were either ugly, too bulky, or not large enough. This is perfect because it has a gazillion pockets for everything. Straight needles, DPNs, and even circulars. Yeah!
Soakin’ Wet Saturday
Today we had torrential downpours in lovely Madison. Storms started at about 8 AM and continued pretty much all day long. This didn’t stop the hubby and I from running errands for most of the day, although we did make a pit stop at the LE Inlet for a rain coat for me!
First stop was to pick up some beer from Steve’s. I can’t believe that I actually escaped from that lovely place without buying some wine. Only a solitary six pack of New Glarus Spotted Cow. How is this possible?
Next was on to Barnes & Noble, where Shawn was on the look out for a new Che book to add to his collection. It hasn’t yet hit the shelves there, so he settled for Living with Color instead. (Not sure where that he is going with that one, but I am sure that I will enjoy it as well.)
I got sucked into the vortex of knitting books while I was there. Of course, I did not make it out unscathed. I picked up Son of Stitch N Bitch and Last Minute Knitted Gifts.
I already have the original SNB book, it was one of my main resources while teaching myself to knit. I lurved it! Son of SNB is somewhat focused on knitting projects for men, but I feel that they are pretty unisex. Just a change in the color or type of yarn, and I think that I could girly them up, if needed. I really like some of their sweater patterns, which I am working up my nerve to try. They are relatively simple and straight forward, so I think that I can handle it. I picked the second because I really fell in love with the photography of the projects. They all had luscious colors and beautiful, simple lines. Right up my alley. It is also very thoughtfully written with lots of hints and tips, without sounding at all jargony. It even groups the projects by the time needed to complete them! I am hoping that it will help me with future gift ideas for family and friends. Now I just need to stop at the local yarn store to get some yarn for all these ideas!
After B&N, we decided to look at some cars! Dear Smokey is getting up in miles, over 115,600, so it is getting to be about that time that we put him out to pasture. I am not 100% sure what model I want right now, but it has to be AWD (a must for WI winter weather!) and good gas mileage. This will also be the car I have when Team Colley has kiddos, so it will need to be super-safe and have decent cargo room for schlepping around strollers and whatnot. I do not want a gigantic SUV, but no Speck either. Hmmm. Today we looked at some Jeeps, since Smokey was so good to me, and also the Honda CR-V. Although I am a Jeep-loving woman, I have to admit that I was really impressed with the CR-V. It was way more roomy than I though, and it was quite fun to drive. It is leading the pack right now, but I feel I need to do some more research before I commit. Any and all suggestions are most welcome!
Knitting Fool
I have really taken off with the knitting. I really enjoy doing it while watching TV in the evening. It is relaxing, yet productive at the same time. Now I can make awesome items for myself and the people I love while enjoying LOST or Project Runway. Plus it makes me feel a little less guilty about watching some trashy TV ;0)
Adding another level to the addiction, I have joined Raverly, an online community for knitting and crochet. The site allows you to search for patterns, track your progress on current projects, organize your yarn and needles, and lets you queue up projects you’d like to work on in the future. There are also forums where you can get advice, something I really look to since I have no real resources here other than nice people at the yarn store. I just finished this easy pattern for dish clothes. I whipped them up in a few nights and will be giving them to my mom for Mother’s Day!
Krazy Koreans
I read this article this morning about North Korea saying that sanctions applied against it will be a “declaration of war.” This is in response to the UN condemning the country for launching a rocket earlier this month, which was in direct violation of a 2006 Security Council resolution.
Basically, Norh Korea is attempting to use some crazy logic to rationalize increasing their defense capabilities, including developing nuclear weapons. They even went so far as making a statement “. . . never forget that Seoul is just 50 kilometers away. . .”
This scares the shiznit out of me. I am very interested how the UN with work with the US, Japan, and China in regards to getting North Korea back on the leash. Time will tell.

Why Chi?
ESPN just launched a website dedicated to Chicago sports. Here is a fantastic article on why they chose to use Chicago as the first city, instead of New York, Boston, etc. I feel that it truly captures the feeling that comes with being a Chicago Sports Fan.
Many people across America will ask, "Why Chi?"
Why did Chicago get the first ESPN local site to itself? They will ask what makes us so special. What makes us think we are so special? Why did ESPN choose the Windy City? They will find fault.
Cool.
Why Chicago? Well, we did have the greatest basketball player ever …
As a city, we don’t have a problem with any of that. Most of us will accept it because we are so used to it. Try living here and you’ll understand. If you are born and raised (and gonna die) here, you more than understand … you embrace it. We are — in our minds — the most slept-on, overlooked, underappreciated sports city in the world.
In our minds, this site, one dedicated to all of Chicagoland sports at every level, is long overdue. Because when it comes to the games we all play, watch and love, no one — and I repeat no one — on any corner of any block in any city any place in the world got swagger like us.
These reasons only further our proof:
Because we turned the saying "Good Guys Wear Black" into a rally cry.
Because our Cubs blue is truer blue than Yankees or Dodger blue.
Because the words "upscale" and "sports" don’t mix here.
Because when it comes to sports, we die harder than Bruce Willis.
Because we have a Claes Oldenburg-designed steel sculpture of a 100-foot baseball bat on the corner of Madison and Jefferson in the middle of the city for no damn reason!
Because Michael, Scottie and Phil got us six rings.
Because our players only cry after winning.
Because only here can you have two sides of town that hate each other because of their beloved teams while they will never ever be a threat to one another in winning a World Series.
Because we will put this city up against any city in the world when it comes to diversity, knowledge and passion for sports. There isn’t a city that exists that holds our desire for sports on an everyday basis.
Because we’re about to host the Olympics in 2016.
Because Jackie Robinson is a league to us, not just an icon.
Because only here could a car dealership (Chicagoland Chevrolet Dealership Association) get Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali together for an ad.
Because of Walter Payton.
Because we just won the Jay Cutler sweepstakes.
Because no other place can handle the annual pain that comes along with loving the Cubs.
Because when the Blackhawks eventually win the Stanley Cup, we will — in all of our belligerent arrogance — have the gall to say to anyone who is listening, "We told you so!"
Because we have Ozzie and they don’t.
Because we were the originators of "March Madness."
Because we were too stupid to trademark the phrase and too forgiving to sue someone — anyone! — for copyright infringement.
Because as far as we’re concerned, there is still no team in the history of the NFL that could beat the ’85 Bears.
Because we play with 16-inch Clinchers (TM).
Because we drink Old Style and Olde English at games.
Because we hoop on ice, golf in snow, row on frozen ponds, play beach volleyball on hard sand, do marathons on North Face and play soccer on grass that won’t bend.
Because what Green Bay calls a "tundra," we simply call "a football field."
Because "strikeout" is much harder than "stick ball."
Because we validate the existence of a sports jinx.
Because Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews are the next Crosby and Malkin, and ESPN wants to get an early jump on covering them.
Because the women at Wrigley Field look better (and can drink more) than women who go to baseball games in any other city in the country.
Because our "W" doesn’t stand for a hotel chain or a former president.
Because we consider pitching pennies a sport.
Because win, lose, draw and lose again, we rep our teams like Drew Rosenhaus reps his clients.
Because the greatest sports documentary of all time ("Hoop Dreams") and arguably the greatest sports film ("Brian’s Song") were about what we are all about.
Because we use our brown paper bags for sneaking booze into stadiums, and we don’t use them to show we’re embarrassed of the team we came to see.
Because we (not Denver) made "Rock and Roll, Part 2" famous.
Because we nurtured a Rose from concrete.
Because at least 81 times a year, we "take you out to the ballgame."
Because we’d rather build a spaceship inside of our football stadium than do what the Yankees did to theirs.
Because on any given day, at any given sporting event in the city, Oprah or Obama could be sitting next to you.
Because of what Devin Hester is about to do this season.
Because no one gives the term "ride or die" more meaning when it comes to sports teams than us.
Because of the overtly obvious reasons not even worth mentioning.
Because we got Mike Ditka, fool.

Back in town.
Vacation was great! We spent a week in Orlando with Roz, Luke, and Shawn’s mom. We did Disney and Epcot in addition to catching some pool time. We even celebrated Shawn’s birthday at Medieval Times!! Will post some pictures when I get a chance.
Hattie Mc Hat Hat!!
Hazzah!! I made a hat! I used the additional yarn I had from the scarf project to make a matching hat. Pretty happy with how it turned out. Although, I am thinking of making a bigger pom pom for the top. I still have some left over yarn, so I am going to attempt to make some mittens next!
NOTE: I must admit that the hat and mitten patterns are for straight needles and are sown up with a seam. Once I get the hang of things, I will attempt the circular knitting method where you knit in the round and no seams are needed.
