Travelin’ Gal

All this great weather has been giving me Spring fever. I want to pack some bags, throw the hubby and dog in the car, and hit the road. Seeing these fantastic travel posters on Design*Sponge also makes me feel like being a travelin’ gal. Check out these beautiful new travel posters from artist Dustin Summers of The Heads of State. His brand new series of limited edition 14×24 screen prints are dedicated to eight american cities. while I’m loyal to my Chi, i’ll have to say that Phoenix, Seattle, and New York are my favorite designs in the bunch. Each serigraph is only $30! (100 limited-edition prints) maybe I should just purchase a few of them, they’d be much cheaper than gas.

Sign me up

I’ve decided to up the ante a bit here lately and challenge myself by signing up to take a quilting class. The LYS I go to also carries fabrics for crafting/quilting as offers classes. I bit the bullet and signed up for Beginning Quilting for the month of April. I am pretty excited but also extremely nervous about this. My sewing skills are okay, but not the best. I am hoping this will help me better my skills and also teach me some patience. I can sometimes get easily frustrated with the machine and end up going rogue on a pattern because I want to get it done. Hopefully, this will teach me more about process and doing things the right way. I feel that you can wing it when it comes to quilts.

I have always thought that quilting would be an amazing thing to learn. There are a lot of great modern quilters out there right now that are true artists. I love the idea of practical, functional art. Plus, who doesn’t love to snuggle up in a warm, cuddly quilt?

I’ll be sure to post my progress once I get started. Wish me luck!

Family

Last week was an extremely hard one. My Uncle passes away unexpectedly and last week was the wake and funeral. This was my mother’s brother, Uncle Gene. Always the character, he lived his life impetuously, but without regret. He was a good man and I will miss him dearly. It was a heart-wrenching week, but my family banded together to get through it. I am proud of this and thank God that we have one another.

RIP Uncle Gene. I love you.

Irish Hiking Hat

The hubby recently asked me to knit him a hat like the one he saw on some website. It was a basic cable-knit hat, so I thought that I’d be able to find a pattern for it. After a little searching on Ravelry, I found the Irish Hiking Hat . I decided to do a test run of the pattern before going to work on Shawn’s, so I picked up some Plymouth Encore Worsted that I had in my stash to see what I could do. I decided to double the yarn to give it a chunky, Irish sweater look. I feel like it turned out pretty well, except for the finishing on the crown came up to a little point – or like a nipple according to hubs- so I covered it up by adding a pom pom. I think that the pom makes it look like an old school ski hat. What do you think?

Happy Birthday to Me.

I had a wonderful birthday weekend in Chicago thanks to my hubby, family, and friends. Highlights include a chi-chi dinner at Blackbird followed by some VIP celebratory action at The Wit – what an amazing view! A lovely afternoon at The Modern Wing followed by a fun family dinner. I feel truly blessed.

Comfy Couch Socks

Finished up a pair of socks today. I realized that I have never made a pair for myself! They are pretty basic, something easy and mindless to work on while watching television on the couch. I used Berroco Comfort Sock yarn. Hence the name Comfy Couch Socks. They are super soft and warm, perfect for getting me through the rest of the winter.

RIP Captain Phil Harris

You made catching Deadliest Catch a pure pleasure. I will greatly miss your raspy voice and fantastic practical jokes. The Cornelia Marie will at a loss without you.

I think that Shawn said it best, “Will grow out my beard, drink a 30 pack of Red Bull, chain smoke two packs of ‘red non-filters (soft pack), and call my team ‘fuckers’ all day in your memory. Man, today’s going to suck.”

What’s your IKEA name?

Oh, excuse me, I mean what name would you have if you were a product made by a famous Swedish furniture company whose corporate colors are yellow and blue? Find out here, if you’d like five seconds of silliness to start your Monday.

Plummy Hat & Mittens

I started working on these mittens to give to my friend’s little girl while I was out in Columbus. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get them done in time. I decided to make a matching hat to go with them for her, isn’t it the cutest? I’ve seen fruit/veggie hats for children before and thought that she’d look so sweet in one. I found the pattern Berry Baby Hat on Ravelry. Since it is for an infant, I cast on some additional stitches and doubled up my yarn to make it thicker and a bit bigger for her. I then knit up some leaves from a different pattern and stitched them on next to the stem. Easy peasey. I hope that she likes them.

I’m here.

Well, I had a fantastic time in Columbus visiting the girls and seeing the sweet babies. My only complaint was that I wish I could have stayed longer. It was hard to leave. It made me realize how much I miss the companionship of other women. Not that I don’t love Shawn, but girl time is much needed. I only wish that I could find some girl friends around Madison. Either that or start my campaign for getting the girls to move here . . . or at least visit.

Sadly, when I got back in town, I received a major smack down from a wicked cold. (Thinking that I might have caught something during my travels.) It hit me hard starting on Friday night and I am only now just feeling back to normal. I am hoping that I don’t have any relapses. So far the hubby hasn’t shown any signs of infection, so that is good news.

Hoping now that I get back on the mend, I can get back into the gym and also start working on a few projects I have in mind. . . more details to come.
