Geek Baking

Okay, my inner geek is going bonkers for these Star Wars cookie cutters. I just saw these in the Williams-Sonoma catalog.

Come on, how insane would it be to be able to bite a chunk out of Boba Fett’s head? To dunk Darth Vader in a glass of milk?

Now all they need to come out with is a chocolate mold for when Han Solo was frozen in carbonite!

**Update: they also have pancake molds!**

This just in: she’s crafty

So, I’ve been looking at my postings and decided that I am going to start a separate section on here that will be a special area just for my knitting/sewing/crafty posts. I’m calling it she’s crafty. (Cue The Beastie Boys now.)

I feel like this will help focus things a bit and will give me a little more freedom to write about how creating/crafting effect my everyday life. Ideally, I’ve want to grow this section to include some how-to’s, tutuorials, and maybe even (gulp) patterns that I come up with.

I will still be posting on the main widdershins page, but I want that to be more about my thoughts on current events, photography, and my wackadoo life in general. Hopefully, this will be enjoyable for myself and for those that check in to see what I’m up to!

Noble County Gold

Let’s welcome a new blogger into the family!

I am proud to announce that the hubby has created his own blog: Noble County Gold. He’s been working on it for quite some time and just brought it live last week. Welcome to the interwebs! Shawn has decided to focus his blog on a combination of menswear fashion (vintage and new), rugged outdoorsy stuff, and things he thinks are “candy”. If you know him, you’ll understand that this can vary from old school rap to a box of vintage buttons. I highly recommend taking the NCG tour when you have a chance. Good stuff, honey!

Jake & Elwood

Today is the 30th anniversary of the release of The Blues Brothers. This movie is my top all-time favorite. I can watch it repeatedly for hours, quote every line, sing every song. One of the highlights of my wedding reception was having EVERYONE going nuts on the dance floor while the entire 12min 46 sec rendition of “Sweet Home Chicago” played.

While this movie showcases talented comedic actors and fantastic rhythm and blues musicians, it also brings to life the cit of Chicago itself. From the over-the-top car chases on Lower Wacker Drive to the finale crashing into in the Daley Center, this movie brings Chicago home to me. Having been in exile for most of my adult life from the city I love, I will always identify myself as from Chicago and will always think of it as my “Sweet Home.”

Thanks, Jake and Elwood.

Well Balanced Weekend

I had one of those weekends that were the perfect mixture of play and productivity. Shawn has a “summer schedule” at work, meaning he has every other Friday as a half day. This landed on Friday, so he was home early to help me put in some flowers in the planter boxes up front and do a little yard maintenance. We then headed over to Capital Brewery to enjoy the Beer Garten for the evening with some people he knows from work. It was a lot of fun to meet some new people and enjoy some local brews and entertainment.

Saturday we went to The Cooper’s Tavern in Madison to watch some FIFA Cup action with some friends. USA vs. England! We came out with a tie, luckily I might add, those Three Lions were tough! Very fun cheering on the team with some rowdy soccer fans while enjoying poutine and more yummy beers. After the game we came home and lazed about for the rest of the evening.

Today we got up early and read the papers and had some coffee before heading out to brunch and the always stellar Hubbard Ave. Diner. Afterwards, we drove around and ran some errands at a couple of garden stores. I needed some new gardening gloves and wanted to get a few more plants for the back deck. (Aren’t those yellow pots cute?) We then came home and planted the stuff I picked up. I still need to get some herbs and a few more plantings, but I couldn’t fine anything else I liked. Maybe next weekend.

Now were going to have some Chipoltle for dinner and watch a movie. A perfect end to a perfect weekend! Hope that yours was just as enjoyable.

Drinking the Kool-Aid

Unless you’ve been under a rock this week, you’ve heard all the hype about the new iphone being released in a few weeks. The iphone 4 becomes available on June 24th. I am not writing a tech review here, but I wanted to comment on this a little bit, since I. WANT. ONE. Yes, I have been drinking the Apple-flavored Kool-Aid again.

As a self-admitted Apple worshiper, I must say that I am loving what I am seeing right now. I currently have the iphone 3G, which has served me quite well, but the 4 is looking like it addresses all of the things that I had on my improvement wish list: higher quality camera resolution and included flash, longer battery life, improved display, video recording, a slimmer profile, and improved multi-tasking. Of course, Apple went further than I could have hoped. (Check out this to see all the details.)

Now, I am not going to rush out and buy one on the 24th, as tempting as that may be. I want to see if there are any bugs/issues with it before I plunk down my $199 for one. I also want to check into how AT&T is going to handle its data-usage fees. We currently have a plan with unlimited data, but the folks at old Ma Bell are trying to change that. So far, I believe that we are grandfathered into our current plan, but I don’t want to be messin’ around with things before I am guaranteed that we don’t lose that when we get a new phone.

So. . . here’s to you, Apple. Bottom’s up!

Back to life. . .

Well, we are back from the annual trip to Hilton Head. It was a great trip, as usual! Plenty of surf, sun, and laughs with great friends. I only wish that it could have lasted a little longer.

. . . back to reality, starting with a massive pile of laundry. . .

Peace Out, Madison!

Tomorrow we’re leaving for our annual vacation to the paradise that is Hilton Head Island, SC. I pledge to wear flip flops everyday, wave at the dolphins while at the beach, and drink too many frozen drinks at the Salty Dog Cafe.

See you later, gator!

Tradition

This weekend we went down to Club Ponderosa to spend some QT with the family. We had a great time! One of the best parts of the weekend was watching my mom teach my sister, Ashley, how to make her pie crust and bake two different kind of pies. (Apple and, my favorite, strawberry rhubarb) I was designated scribe and photo journalist, taking pictures of the process as well as writing down the recipes for Ash as she went through the procedures with Mom. I remember mom doing the same thing for me a few years ago. I love how patient mom is with her directions and how she makes you work things out for yourself while gently nudging you in the right direction. Ashley did a fantastic job and both pies turned out to be delicious.

I feel that it is really important to learn these things from our family members in order to keep our traditions alive for future generations. Food, recipes, crafts, gardening, etc. all are a part of the fabric that makes our family what it is. I remember learning from my Grammy how to bake our family favorite poppyseed cake when I was about twelve, every time I make it, it brings back wonderful memories of our time together. It is a connect that lives on even though she passed away many years ago. Something that I can share with my children in the future.
