For those who served.

In honor of my grandfathers and uncles who served our country, thanks to all the veterans who have served and protected our country. Please take some time on this Veteran’s Day to thank those who served.

Image is my maternal grandfather, John Grzybowski. He was a lieutenant during WWII.

Humbly tooting my horn.

I just had to share that my knits have been featured on the blog N’East Style today. Christine Mitchell, the woman behind the amazing style blog was gracious enough to approach me via Twitter about doing a post on some of my knitwear. After pulling myself off of the floor, I quickly accepted. Christine has a fantastic eye for both men’s and women’s fashions. I particularly love how she interprets the current menswear trend of trad/workwear for women. So great to know that others out there are more interested in duckboots and tweed than four inch stilettos and micro minis. If you have time, please check out her site, you won’t be disappointed.

Baggu Zips

You all know how much I love my Baggu bags. Well, those wonderful Baggu people have come out with another must have item, the Baggu Zips. These adorable little zippered pouches are made out of the same ripstop nylon as the original bags and come in a plethora of colors and prints. (I’m pretty partial to the dots myself.) And are perfect to organize the detritus of our lives. They range in size from 3.25” x 4” to 12” x 15” so you can bag everything from earbuds, toiletries, cords and chargers to shoes, art supplies, or even a hairdryer. I suggest you pick some up soon, they’d make great stocking stuffers!

Make your voice heard.

No matter what your political beliefs are, please take the time today to do your civic duty and vote. It is the foundation of what makes this country great, so if you believe in this wacky and wonderful democratic system of ours, please do your part.

Wingtips: not just for the gents

There was a great article today in the NYT on how wingtips have been stealthily become a favorite in men’s fashion in recent years. I, personally, am glad to see it happen. I’ve gotten a little tired of the retro sneakers and clunky work boots everywhere. Great to see something with a little more polish. (ahem)

This trend has also made it on the women’s scene with oxfords and brogues making there appearance. I recently fell for it myself with this purchase. I also have a beloved pair of Church’s in my closet, a gift from my always stylish hubby. (Who has been ahead of this trend for a few years, as usual.) I’m now addicted and would love to get a pair in a saddle color or maybe with some tweed mixed in. Here’s a few from my wish list.

I’ve got the blues: Hound Dog Taylor

Hound Dog Taylor is a major influence on my musical tastes. This was not by my choosing, but rather due to my parents love of slide guitar and the blues. They would often go to see him at clubs on the South Side and had many, if not all, of his records.

Taylor was known for his electrified slide guitar playing roughly styled after that of Elmore James, his cheap Japanese guitars, and his raucous boogie beats. Relatively unknown outside of Chicago, he rose to national acclaim after becoming the first artist to record with Alligator Records. Taylor also inspired a young protege named George Thorogood.

Lee Friedlander: America By Car

While visiting NYC last week, I was able to visit the Whitney Museum of American Art. Often referred to simply as "the Whitney", or “my boyfriend” by one particular fan, it focuses on 20th & 21st century American art.

While I was there, I was able to check out the Lee Friedlander exhibit: America By Car. While driving across most of the country’s fifty states in an ordinary rental car, the artist applied the brilliantly simple conceit of deploying the side-view mirror, rearview mirror, windshield, and side windows as picture frames within which to record reflections of this country’s eccentricities and obsessions. By capturing roadside bars, motels, churches, monuments, suspension bridges, and often his own image in this construct, it gives the impression that you get on a long road trip; images and scenery becomes hypnotic as it blurs together as you continue along your way, not quite remembering what you’ve already seen. Simply an inspiring exhibit, it’s going on until November 28th, so I recommend all those who are able to make the trip.

NYC Trip

Shawn and I will be heading to NYC for a few days. He’s going for a PR event for work and I’m just tagging along. Looking forward to some serious shopping and going to The Whitney and MOMA. We’ll be staying at The Standard which is right on The High Line, so I’m looking forward to checking that out as well. I’ll post highlights when we get back in town. Ciao!

Envelope Swap: October Swag

This month in Ravelry’s Envelope Swap, I received an orange-themed envelope from Sweetm: jack’o lantern stickers, orange glow sticks, a skein of orange cotton yarn, a tin of mints, candy corn, m&m’s and some cute striped socks. Thanks so much, Sweetm!
