I might be part elf.

Sorry for the break in postings, but I have been in overdrive working on projects for Christmas: sewing, knitting, baking, etc. Many of them have to remain secret until after the holidays, but I can mention at least this one: the Midnight Hike Neckwarmer. It is for Heather, the girl that cuts my hair. I based it off of the Irish Hiking Scarf pattern that I found on Ravelry. I used Caron Simply Soft yarn in a midnight blue color and doubled it so it would give me a chunkier knit. What do you think of my cables? I was nervous about them, but found them super easy! I hope that she likes it.

Well, I need to get back to my to do list. I promise to post more details on the projects I’ve been working on once they are all gifted.

Thanksgiving 2009

Well, the Torto clan made the trip up to Madison for Thanksgiving. It wasn’t quite as hectic and stressful this year. I think partly because Shawn’s mom and brother weren’t here (Less performance anxiety and fewer mouths to feed.) and also because I had it last year, so knew how to better handle things. Happy to report that there was no fighting or food related calamities.

Roz and Luke came up early on the train Tuesday evening. Mom, Dad, Ash, and Mike came up Thursday morning and returned Friday afternoon. Roz and Luke stayed until Sunday, when I drove them back down to the Chi. It was so nice to be able to have them stay longer. We went to see The Fantastic Mr. Fox -which totally lived up to its name – went to chop down the Christmas Tree, and just basically hung out and had a good time.

I really enjoyed hosting Thanksgiving. It was so nice to not have to travel! Plus, we rarely get to entertain like we did in Columbus, so it was great to be able to have a house full of people again.

Hoping that everyone had as nice of a Turkey Day as I did.

Oh boy.

Holy crap, Christmas it almost here. Like less than six weeks away! Not good, people. How am I going to lovingly craft homemade gifts for everyone, bake a dozen different kinds of homemade cookies, wrap presents with loving care, write witty, individualized holiday cards, hand craft ornaments for the tree. . . . who am I kidding. I should just book a flight to the Bahamas now.

It’s a sweater!

Shawn requested that I knit something for a co-worker’s baby shower a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t have the time (or the energy) to make a baby blanket, so I decided to attempt the “Child’s Placket Neck Pullover” from Joelle Hoverson’s Last-Minute Knitted Gifts. I’ve been wanting to work this pattern for a while now, so this was just the opportunity. I went out and purchased some Plymouth Yarn Dreambaby DK Solid in orange and magenta. I wanted to do something more colorful than pastel pink. (They knew they were having a girl.) So I went with more of an Oilily color palette.

The pattern was not the most clearly written, but I was able to work it out after reading it over a few times. The actual knitting was pretty easy. I was nervous about joining the raglan sleeves, but it was pretty simple. I think that knitting a few pairs of socks helped because they use a similar stitch for the gusset shaping.

I had to make a few modifications to the pattern in order to use the two colors. Mostly in the placket area. The original calls for seed stitching on either side of the placket that joins with the collar. I couldn’t figure out how to switch yarns while still having it attach correctly, so I just used stockinette instead. I also decided to do an asymetrical placket to give it a little modern feel. Instead of doing buttons, I sewed in snaps on the placket and then stitched on some buttons in the front for decoration. Snaps are easier to deal with for squirmy babies, plus I think that button-hole knitting skills leave something to be desired.

All in all, I am pretty impressed with myself on how well it turned out. Yeah for me!!!

PS. I had a lot of leftover yarn, so I made a matching hat and booties. (Please forgive the atrocious photos!)

Happy Birthday Sesame Street!

Can you believe that Sesame Street has hit the big 4-0 today!? Yes, it was first aired on November 10, 1969. What an amazing feat for it to still be on the air, let alone still relevant and much loved by children across the globe.

Ernie and Bert. I could write on them for days. They describe the perfect relationship to me. Compatibility, silliness, give and take, understanding. I even describe my marriage as Shawn is the Ernie to my Bert.

I must admit, that I still look up some of my favorite sketches on YouTube. Here are a few of my favorites:

Alien Lizard Babies are back!

I think that I might be a little too excited about the series premiere of V tonight. For those of you not in the know, V was originally a mini series in the early 80’s (83-84) about aliens – lizard-like creatures that disguise themselves in human form- that come to earth feigning friendship while slowing taking over control of the planet. Total cold-war, fascist undertones and shades of Nazism blended with alien lizard babies and eating guinea pigs. Awe.Some. I am hoping that this re-imagined version will live up to the original. We’ll see.

Halloween Wisconsin-Style

Yes, I am an insane person. I hand made a costume for my dog. But isn’t he cute? Plus Walter won first place for “Scariest Costume” at the doggie daycare/boarding place that we take him. All proceeds went to the local K-9 unit, so I feel like I am justified in my delusions, since it all went to charity.

Roz and the nephew came up to celebrate Halloween Wisconsin-style.We’ll be carving pumpkins, getting some food together for the area food drive, attending the Halloween parade, and of course, trick-or-treating. Hoping to need a wheelbarrow for all the candy he gets.

Have a happy Halloween!
