What are you looking at?

Surfing through the BBC website, I came across this article about the artist Antony Gormley featuring 40,000 clay figures. The figures were handmade by 100 volunteers ages seven to 70.

I really enjoyed how individual each figure is so different and displays a sense of personality even though they are all quite simple in construction. I would love to check this out in person to really be able to grasp the details. Pretty neat, huh?

Derby Day

Today is the 134th running of of the Kentucky Derby. I am a bit sad this year because we are not in Columbus, going to Beulah Park for the local Derby Party. A group of us have been going for years. Tons of fun, watching live racing, placing bets, drinks, and BBQ. I will warn you to stay away from the mint juleps though, nasty stuff. This year Shawn and I are just watching it on TV. Not quite the same, but still a good time.

(This year I am picking Pyro to win. Current odds are 6-1 one. )

UPDATE: The winner was the favorite, Big Brown. Pyro finished 8th, good thing I didn’t put any money on that one!

Spindle for Sale

Ok, not sure how many of you remember this, from “Wayne’s World,” but the Spindle is now for sale on eBay. The Berywyn landmark is located in Cermak Plaza and features cars from the 60s, 70s and 80s skewered on a metal spike. It was originally created by artist Dustin Shuler in 1989.

I read that Berwyn residents are divided on what to do with the structure, which is covered with rust and pigeon poop. (Gross!) It was supposed to be dismantled last year to make way for a Walgreens or something, but now preservation groups have formed and protested. My favorite one is www.savethespindle.com I think that I might have to get a t-shirt!

Hipsters

Ok, there is an ongoing joke between a few of us about the new “hipsters” that are out there. Basically, viewing them as a newly found species that you would see on the Discovery Channel. Please read this article, it might help explain our point of view. Totally hilarious.

** Credit must be given to tabula rasa for originally bringing this article to our attention. She is a leader in the field of hipster research, the one who broke the code on the hipster’s call.

Oh Happy Day!

Unless you live in a hole, you must know that the long awaited season premiere of LOST is on tonight. Although I am not heavily into television (Project Runway obsession aside) this is my most favorite show of all. I cannot say enough about the intrigue, plot twists, love triangles, super sci-fi craziness! Oh Jack, Hurley, Sayid, Sawyer, even evil, diabolical, nefarious Ben, how I have missed you so!

Webkinz Anonymous

Ok, so my nephew got these stuffed animals for Christmas called Webkins Think of Beanie Babies that have their own website and virtual world. Kinda cool, kinda scary. I mean what happened to “make believe”? So these Webkinz have “money” that you earn by playing games and things on the site. You then use these dollars to buy food, clothing, toys, etc. for your pet Webkinz. (Talk about learning the value of a dollar early!)

So, my nephew was having a hard time playing some of the games, so like the wonderful aunt that I am, I tell him I will go online and play some of the games for him to earn some cash for him . . . little did I know that I was going to be sucked into the vortex! I am now addicted to playing this dumb game called Cash Cow 2. Ugh. It is like Tetris, so you can understand the addiction. I could lose hours in this black hole if I allowed it. The good thing is that at least I am raking in the dough for the little guy to buy a virtual mansion for his pets.

Oh why Cubbies, why?

The Cubs. What can I say? They struggle and rise to the occasion to win the NL central in a heated race that lasted for weeks against the Brewers . . . only to be swept by the Diamond Backs. I cannot discuss it, only accept it and move on. “Next year.”
